How many grams of sugar are in sherbet? Sherbet. It’s the fruity colorful option at the ice cream parlor that we order when we don’t fancy ice cream or sorbet. Or the option we order when we just want to feel like a big kid. Sherbet normally comes in orange or rainbow (hence feeling like a kid). But exactly how much sugar is in sherbet? Is sherbet higher or lower in sugar than ice cream or sorbet? And what is the difference between sherbet and sorbet?

In order to answer all of these very important questions I randomly selected 9 sherbets and collated the total sugar content of a 2/3 cup serving. I have then put together this list of these sherbets in descending order of sugar content. That means you will want to read right to the end to find out the lowest sugar sherbet I came across in this experiment as well as a SUGAR-FREE alternative.

But first, what is sherbet?

What is Sherbet?

Sherbet is essentially a sorbet-style frozen dessert with a small amount of milk in it. This differs from sorbets which are made just from water, sugar, and flavoring (usually some kind of fruit puree). If you want to learn more about the sugar content of sorbet you can read my post: How Much Sugar is in Sorbet?

So let’s dig in, how many grams of sugar is in sherbet?

How Many Grams of Sugar is in Sherbet?

As a general rule, there are 23g-29g of total sugar in a 2/3 cup of sherbet, with an average sugar content of 27g. Sherbet tends to be lower in sugar than sorbet and most sherbets are sweetened with sugar and corn syrup.

Ranking 9 Different Sherbets Based on Sugar Content

In this section, I will rank the sugar content of nine different leading flavors and brands of sherbet available from grocery stores. This will start with the highest sugar content down to the lowest.

1. Baskin-Robbins Orange Sherbet – 29g of Total Sugar

*Sweetened with sugar and corn syrup*

The highest sugar sherbet I came across in this experiment was Baskin-Robbins Orange Sherbet. There are 29g of total sugar in a 2/3 serving of Baskin-Robbins Orange Sherbet. 23g of these sugars are added from sugar and corn syrup.

If you are interested in how this compares to the sugar content of Baskin-Robbins ice cream pints, then make sure to check out the following post I wrote – What is the Average Amount of Sugar in Ice Cream?

2. Great Value Orange Sherbet – 28g of Total Sugar

*Sweetened with sugar and corn syrup*

Quite a few of the sherbets I looked at in this experiment (4 out of 19 to be precise) contain 28g of total sugar in a serving. One of these sherbets is another orange one, this time from Great Value (you know Walmart’s own brand).

This Great Value Orange Sherbet flavor contains 28g of sugar, 26g of these sugars are added. Just like Baskin-Robbins Orange Sherbet, this one is also sweetened with sugar and corn syrup.

3. Baskin-Robbins Rainbow Sherbet – 28g of Total Sugar

*Sweetened with sugar and corn syrup*

It is exactly the same sugar situation with Baskin-Robbins Rainbow sherbet – 28g of total sugar, 26g of which are added from sugar and corn syrup.

4. Kroger Deluxe Rainbow Sherbet – 28g of Total Sugar

*Sweetened with sugar, corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup*

Kroger’s deluxe rainbow sherbet also contains 28g of total sugar, 26g of which are added sugar. But this sherbet does contain an extra sweetener – it is sweetened with sugar, corn syrup, and high fructose corn syrup.

5. Bombay Tropical Sherbet Swizzle – 28g of Total Sugar

*Sweetened with sugar and corn syrup*

Bombay Tropical Sherbet Swizzle is the final sherbet on this list that contains 28g of total sugar per serving. 25g of these are added, from you guessed it, sugar and corn syrup. I am noticing a theme here.

6. Favorite Day Rainbow Sherbet – 27g of Total Sugar

*Sweetened with sugar, corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup*

Other than Kroger’s sherbet, Favorite Day’s sherbet is the only other sherbet on this list that is also sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. There are 27g of total sugar per serving, 25g of which are added.

And in case you are wondering Favorite Day brand is owned by Target.

7. Signature Select Rainbow Sherbet – 27g of Total Sugar

*Sweetened with sugar and corn syrup*

Signature Select’s (Albertsons-owned) rainbow sherbet also contains 27g of total sugar per serving and it is sweetened with – of course, sugar and corn syrup.

8. Baskin-Robbins Frozen Wild N Reckless Sherbet – 26g of Total Sugar

*Sweetened with sugar and corn syrup*

Another day, another Baskin-Robbins flavor – this time their Wild N Reckless flavor. In case you are wondering their Wild N Reckless sherbet is made of green apple, blue raspberry, and fruit punch. So now you know.

Anyway, I digress – back to the sugar content.

Wild N Reckless is Baskin-Robbins’ lowest sugar sherbet at 26g of sugar (24g of which are added) – although to be honest there isn’t a huge amount in it. Like the other Baskin-Robbins sherbets (and most sherbets) it is sweetened with sugar and corn syrup.

9. Meadow Gold Rainbow Sherbet – 23g of Total Sugar

*Sweetened with sugar and corn syrup*

The lowest sugar sherbet I came across in this experiment is Meadow Gold Rainbow Sherbet, which contains 23g of total sugar, 21g of which is added sugar.

That is 20% less sugar than the highest sugar sherbet on this list – but at the same time, there isn’t a huge amount in it.

Are There Any Sugar-Free Alternatives To Sherbets?

Unfortunately, there do not appear to be any sugar-free Sherbets available. But what if 23g of sugar per serving is still too much for you? Is there a sugar-free alternative that still hits some of the sherbet spots?

Well, one suggestion I came across is Rebel Orange Ice Cream – okay so technically this is a sugar-free “ice cream” alternative. But it isn’t too dissimilar to an orange sherbet but with 0g of sugar. Instead, this ice cream is sweetened with erythritol, allulose, and monk fruit.

How many grams of sugar are in sherbet? What have we learned from the above?
