Sugar Content of All Pizza Hut Pizzas – Ranked

The sugar content of all Pizza Hut Pizzas. No one out pizzas the hut – right? But how exactly does Pizza Hut do when it comes to sugar content and its pizzas? In this post, I am going to go through the sugar content of all the Pizza Hut menu pizzas. I will also go through some Frequently Asked Questions when it comes to sugar and Pizza Hut. If you are interested I also recently did similar posts for Papa John’s and Domino’s (see my posts: The Sugar Content of All Domino’s Pizzas Ranked and How Much Sugar is in a Papa John’s Pizza). Today I wanted to cover Pizza Hut. So, first how much sugar is in Pizza Hut pizzas?

Is There a Lot of Sugar in Pizza Hut Pizzas?

As a general rule, the best way to order a lower-sugar pizza at Pizza Hut is to order a small size and avoid the BBQ backyard chicken pizza. A slice of a small Pizza Hut pizza will usually contain 1g of sugar or less. Make sure to avoid BBQ sauce and pineapple if creating your own Pizza Hut pizza.

How Much Sugar is in a Pizza Hut Pizza?

As a general rule, the sugar content of Pizza Hut pizzas depends on the crust, size, and toppings. For example, there are ess than 8g of sugar in most Pizza Hut small hand-tossed pizzas, except for the Backyard BBQ Chicken – which contains 32g of sugar in a small hand-tossed pizza.

In comparison, there are 32g-72g of sugar in a large Thin N Crispy Pizza Hut pizza. Most large Thin N Crispy Pizza Hut pizzas contain 32g-40g of sugar, but again the Backyard BBQ Chicken contains 72g of sugar in a large Thin N Crispy.

Does Pizza Hut Have Sugar In it?

Several Pizza Hut ingredients do contain added sugar such as crusts, sauces, meats (ham, bacon, sausage), and some cheese. There are also various Pizza Hut ingredients that do not contain added sugar such as the veggies, and Thin N Crispy crust.

Does Pizza Hut Crust Have Sugar?

All Pizza Hut crusts, apart from the Thin N Crispy crust, contain added sugar.

Thin N Crispy Crusts

I also thought it interesting that even though the thin n crispy crust is the only Pizza Hut crust that doesn’t contain added sugar, it is the large thin n crispy slices that have the highest sugar content. I can only assume this is because more toppings and sauce are added to a thin n crispy pizza as the crust is less of the feature piece.

For example, a large original pan slice of backyard BBQ pizza contains less sugar than a large slice of thin n crispy, at 7g of sugar. This is even though the original crust contains sugar and the Thin N Crispy does not.

Does Pizza Hut Thin Crust Have Sugar?

Pizza Hut’s Thin N Crispy crust does not contain added sugar.

How Much Sugar is in Pizza Hut Sauce?

The classic marina pizza sauce at Pizza Hut does not contain added sugar. There is, however, naturally occurring sugar in the sauce. If you order the regular amount of marinara sauce on your pizza, one slice of pizza will contain less than 1g of sugar. However, if you ask for extra marinara sauce on your Pizza Hut pizza (aka a lot of marinara sauce) this will take the sugar content up to 1g of sugar per slice (1/8 pizza).

2. Cheese – < 1g in Small Hand Tossed Slice & 4g in Large Thin N Crispy Slice

As a general rule, cheese pizza is a lower-sugar pizza option at most pizza joints (the same is true for Papa John’s and Domino’s). The cheese pizza at Pizza Hut is topped with marinara sauce and mozzarella. A small hand-tossed slice contains less than 1g of sugar and a large Thin N Crispy contains 4g of sugar.

3. Meat Lovers – < 1g in Small Hand Tossed Slice & 4g in Large Thin N Crispy Slice

Pizza Hut’s Meat Lovers pizza really is for meat lovers only. Topped with pepperoni, Italian sausage, ham, bacon, seasoned pork, and beef. A small hand-tossed slice contains less than 1g of sugar and a large thin n crispy slice contains 4g of sugar.

4. Pepperoni – < 1g in Small Hand Tossed Slice & 4g in Large Thin N Crispy Slice

The pepperoni pizza at Pizza Hut is topped with two ingredients – pepperoni and mozzarella. This is another lower-sugar pizza option with less than 1g of sugar in a small hand-tossed slice and 4g of sugar in a large Thin N Crispy slice.

5. Pepperoni Lovers – < 1g in Small Hand Tossed Slice & 4g in Large Thin N Crispy Slice

8. Hawaiian Chicken – 1g in Small Hand Tossed Slice & 6g in Large Thin N Crispy Slice

Aloha! The Hawaiian chicken pizza at Pizza Hut is topped with chicken, ham, pineapple, and green peppers. Pineapple is one of the higher sugar toppings you can add to pizza at any pizza joint (the same is true for Papa John’s and Domino’s).

Pineapple is naturally high in sugar and most pineapple added to pizzas also contains added sugar – this is also the case at Pizza Hut, which is why their Hawaiian chicken pizza is a slightly higher sugar pizza.  A small hand-tossed slice still only contains 1g of sugar, but a large Thin N Crispy slice contains 6g of sugar.

9. Backyard BBQ Chicken – 4g in Small Hand Tossed Slice & 9g in Large Thin N Crispy Slice

If you have read my posts on Domino’s and Papa John’s, you will learn that basically, the highest sugar pizza you can order is any pizza with “BBQ” in the name. This is because BBQ sauce is very high in sugar. The backyard BBQ chicken pizza at Pizza Hut is no exception. This chicken, bacon, and onion BBQ pizza contains 4g of sugar in a small hand-tossed slice and 9g of sugar in a Thin N Crispy slice.

Sugar Content of All Pizza Hut Pizzas – The Final Bite

The sugar content of all Pizza Hut Pizzas. What have we learned from the above? Well, when it comes to pizza toppings if you want to avoid high sugar content then you need to avoid BBQ and Hawaiian-style pizzas. This is no surprise really. In fact, in my research, this has been true for all pizza chains. If you want to lower the sugar content, then you are best opting for a small hand-tossed slice of pizza. This will usually give you a sugar content of around 1g of sugar per slice. Yes, it is not a whole pizza, but it is the lowest sugar option, and just think of the calories you will save from not eating a whole pizza.
