How Can You Get the Lowest Sugar Baked Beans? In this post, I am going to be sharing with you the lowest sugar baked bean brands available from grocery stores and online. That’s right – the humble baked beans. That staple of English cuisine, baked beans will always have a special place in my heart. Having grown up in the UK, baked beans were just a part of your everyday life. However, what if you are on a low sugar diet? How much sugar is in a typical can of baked beans and what are some of the lowest sugar brands available? I will go through 11 different brands of baked beans (including the biggest brand of them all Heinz). I will also answer some frequently asked questions when it comes to sugar content of baked beans.

How Much Sugar is in Baked Beans?

As a general rule, most baked beans contain 10g-15g of total sugar per half-cup serving. Two lower sugar baked beans are:

– Heinz No Added Sugar Baked Beans – 3.9g of Total Sugar

– Eden Organic Baked Beans with Sorghum, Mustard, and Spices – 5g of Total Sugar

Ranking the Sugar Content of Bake Bean Brands

Baked beans! They are warming, comforting, and a great source of protein! But how about their sugar content? Exactly how much sugar is in baked beans and are there any lower sugar baked beans out there? To answer this question, I randomly selected 11 types of baked beans and looked at what they are sweetened with and their total sugar content.

To make comparisons equal I apportioned serving sizes for all brands to a ½ cup serving. Most baked beans brands serving sizes were 1/2 cup, however, some brands define a serving size as 1 cup.  In these instances, I halved the sugar content to get a ½ cup serving. I will go through these 11 baked beans in descending order of sugar content (so highest first).

1. Bush’s Best Honey Baked Beans – 15g of Total Sugar

The highest sugar baked beans I came across in my experiment were Bush’s best honey-baked beans. This isn’t a huge surprise considering they are honey-baked beans. These baked beans are sweetened with brown sugar, sugar, and honey. There are 15g of sugar per half-cup serving, 14g of which are added.

2. B&M Baked Beans – 14g of Total Sugar

Another of the higher sugar baked beans I came across in my experiment is from B&M. B&M baked beans are sweetened with sugar, molasses, brown sugar, and dextrose and there are 14g of total sugar per half-cup serving.

3. Bush’s Country Style Baked Beans – 14g of Total Sugar

Another baked bean that contains 14g of sugar per half-cup serving is Bush’s Country Style Baked beans. Bush’s Country Style Baked beans are cooked in a thicker, sweeter, and richer sauce. These rich baked beans are sweetened with brown sugar.

4. Bush’s Original Baked Beans – 12g of Total Sugar

Bush’s original baked beans are sweetened with just one sweetener – brown sugar. There are 12g of total sugar per half-cup serving, 11g of which are added.

5. Van Camp’s Original Baked Beans – 12g of Total Sugar

Another brand of baked beans that contains 12g of total sugar per half-cup serving is Van Camp’s original baked beans. These baked beans are sweetened with sugar, brown sugar, and molasses.

6. Bush’s Best Home Style Baked Beans – 11.5g of Total Sugar

Next up is another entry from Bush’s & this time their home Style baked beans. What makes their Home Style of baked beans different from their others? Well, they are tangier.

These tangy baked beans are sweetened with brown sugar and there are 11.5g of total sugar per 1/2 cup serving, 10g of which is added sugar.

7. Bush’s 25% Less Sugar and Sodium, Brown Sugar Baked Beans – 11g of Total Sugar

Next is the final Bush’s entry on this list, Bush’s 25% less sugar and sodium brown sugar baked beans. These baked beans are indeed lower in sugar than Bush’s honey, country style, home style, and original beans at 11g of total sugar per half-cup serving.

As you may have guessed from the name, these baked beans are sweetened with brown sugar.

8. Heinz Baked Beans – 10.3g of Total Sugar

Having grown up in the UK I am very familiar with Heinz baked beans. Heinz baked beans are a British food staple! Just a note that baked beans are a bit different in the UK in that they do not tend to contain spices and they do not contain bacon.

Heinz baked beans are lower in sugar than a lot of other baked bean brands, coming in at 10.3g of sugar per 1/2 cup serving. Heinz baked beans are sweetened with sugar.

9. Amy’s Organic Vegetarian Baked Beans – 9g of Total Sugar

Another lower sugar baked bean is from Amy. These baked beans from Amy’s are vegetarian and organic. Amy’s baked beans are sweetened with organic evaporated cane juice and organic maple syrup, and there are 9g of total sugar per half-cup serving. 10. Eden Organic Baked Beans with Sorghum, Mustard, and Spices – 5g of Total Sugar

A great lower sugar baked bean comes from Eden. Eden baked beans are organic and sweetened with sorghum. There are only 5g of total sugar per serving.

My number 1 recommendation for lower sugar Baked beans is Heinz No Added Sugar Baked Beans. Heinz reduced sugar baked beans. These baked beans do not contain added sugar and instead are sweetened with steviol glycosides. There are 3.9g of naturally occurring sugar per half-cup serving.

How Can You Get the Lowest Sugar Baked Beans? What have we learned from the above? Well, if you are looking for the lowest sugar can of baked beans then you should always choose no added sugar options. For example, Heinz no added sugar baked beans come out at 3.9g of sugar per serving. That is almost 5x less sugar than the highest entry on this list. There are also a variety of different styles of baked beans available so depending on what you like and are familiar with you will want to choose your favorite brand’s lowest sugar option. Oh, and if you need a serving suggestion my advice is to keep it simple – beans on toast.
