Does relish have a lot of sugar? In this post, I am going to share with you the sugar content of relishes as well as rank 10 different relish brands based on sugar content. Relish – you put it on burgers, hot dogs, or just about anything you want. Traditionally a relish is a combination of cooked and pickled items mixed with herbs and spices and then used as a condiment. In the USA you are most likely to be familiar with American sweet relish which is a pickled cucumber jam eaten with hot dogs or on burgers. It is sweet. It is tangy. However, how much sugar is there in relish and what are some lower sugar relish options available from grocery stores and online?
What is the Sugar Content of Relish?
Unsweetened dill relishes tend to contain 0g of sugar per serving. As a general rule, sweet relishes contain 3g-4g of total sugar per 15g tablespoon serving. There are some sweet relishes that are sweetened with sweeteners and so are sweet but contain 0g of sugar per serving. Two examples of sugar free sweet relishes are Vlasic and Mt Olive.

In this section, I will go through each of my 10 picks for lower sugar relishes item by item. I highlight in an *asterisk* any notable features for each brand.
1. Vlasic Squeezeable Homestyle No Sugar Added Sweet Relish – 0g of Total Sugar
*Sweetened with sucralose
If you are looking for a sugar-free sweet relish, you really cannot go wrong with Vlasic homestyle no added sugar sweet relish. This relish still tastes sweet as it is sweetened with sucralose, yet there is 0g of sugar per 15g serving.

2. 365 by Whole Foods Market Organic Pickle Dill Relish – 0g of Sugar
*No added sugar
A great way to buy lower sugar relish is to just go for relishes that are not labeled as sweet. For example, this relish from 365 by Whole Foods is just labeled as “pickle dill relish” rather than sweet relish – and indeed it is sugar free as well as containing 0g of total sugar per serving. It also has the benefit of being organic.

3. Heinz Dill Relish – 0g of Total Sugar

Heinz dill relish is another example of a “not sweet” relish that is added sugar free as well as containing 0g of total sugar per serving. Heinz dill relish comes in a convenient squeezy bottle and can be bought on Amazon here.
4. Mt. Olive No Added Sugar Sweet Relish – Not A Significant Source of Sugar
*Sweetened with Splenda
If you prefer your relish to still have a sweet taste to it, but do not want to consume sugar then check out Mt. Olive No Added Sugar Sweet Relish on Amazon here.

All the relishes so far on this list have been pickle relishes. But how about sweet onion relish? How much sugar is in a sweet onion relish? I have already looked at 365’s organic dill pickle relish, which is sugar free. However, 365’s sweet pickle relish is not sugar free – it is sweetened with organic cane sugar and contains 4g of total sugar per 15g tablespoon serving.

It’s got to be both:

However, the good news is that there are some relish brands available that contain 0g of sugar. The really great news is that Heinz’s relish, probably the biggest brand of relish available and the one you are most likely to find in grocery stores, contains 0g sugar-free. Your hot dogs and burgers will never be the same again.
