How much sugar is in Chex? Which Chex is the lowest in sugar? Chex. It’s the crisscross checkerboard cereal that everybody loves. But how much sugar is in Chex? And more importantly which Chex has the lowest sugar – is it the wheat, the rice, the corn, or the flavored Chex varieties? That is the question I want to answer in this post.

To answer this question, I have collated the total sugar content per serving of each variety of Chex cereal and put the results together in descending order of total sugar content in the article. I have also selected some own-brand alternatives of the lowest sugar Chex varieties to see if the sugar content is consistent across own-brand alternatives.

So, let’s dig in – how much sugar is in Chex, and which Chex is lowest in sugar?

How Much Sugar is in Chex?

Rice Chex (and own-brand equivalents) is a low-sugar cereal that contains 3g of total sugar per serving. Corn Chex is the next lowest sugar Chex, containing 4g and wheat Chex contains 6g of sugar. Flavored Chex are much higher in sugar, as they contain 8g to 10g of sugar per serving.

In this section I will go through and rank 13 different options of Chex and Chex Alternative cereals. I rank these in descending order of sugar content from highest to lowest.

1. Chocolate Chex – 10g of Total Sugar

First up – Chocolate Chex! It probably doesn’t come as a huge surprise that Chocolate Chex is one of Chex’s highest sugar Chex cereals. A serving of Chocolate Chex cereal contains 10g of total sugar per serving.

2. Honey Nut Chex – 10g of Total Sugar

The other highest sugar Chex is their honey nut, which contains 10g of total sugar per serving. As a general rule, any cereal with honey in the name will usually be a higher sugar variety. For example, honey nut Cheerios contain 6 times the sugar content as original Cheerios (Are Cheerios High in Sugar and Are There Any Sugar-Free Cheerio Alternatives?).

3. Peanut Butter Chex – 9g of Total Sugar

Peanut Butter Chex is also a higher sugar variety of this cereal brand – coming in at 9g of total sugar per serving.

4. Maple Brown Sugar Chex – 9g of Total Sugar

It also shouldn’t come as a huge shock that the version of Chex with “sugar” in its name, aka Maple Brown Sugar, is also a higher sugar variety. There are 9g of total sugar in a serving of Maple Brown Sugar Chex.

5. Cinnamon Chex – 8g of Total Sugar

Cinnamon fans may be interested to find out that there are 8g of total sugar in a serving of Cinnamon Chex.

6. Blueberry Chex – 8g of Total Sugar

The final flavored Chex cereal on this list is Blueberry Chex, which also contains 8g of total sugar per post. The same as Cinnamon Chex.

Essentially all flavored Chex cereals are higher in sugar (8g-10g per serving).

7. Wheat Chex – 6g of Total Sugar

I established in the previous entries that flavored Chex are higher in sugar. Flavor Chex varieties tend to contain 8g to 10g of total sugar per serving. But how about the simple unflavored Chex? As in wheat, corn, and rice Chex? Well out of these three varieties, the wheat Chex is the highest sugar, containing 6g of total sugar.

8. Corn Chex – 4g of Total Sugar

How about corn Chex? Well, it is actually 50% lower in sugar than Wheat Chex. There are 4g of total sugar per serving of Corn Chex.

9. Great Value Corn Squares – 4g of Total Sugar

I randomly selected a Corn Chex alternative to see if the sugar content was the same, and yup – there are also 4g of total sugar per serving in this alternative variety – Great Value Corn Squares (Walmart’s Alternative own-brand offering).

10. Rice Chex – 3g of Total Sugar

The lowest sugar Chex you can get is the rice variety. There are just 3g of total sugar per serving of Rice Chex – that is half the total sugar content in Rice Chex as Wheat Chex.

11. Great Value Rice Squares – 3g of Total Sugar

Seeing how Rice Chex is the lowest sugar Chex variety I thought I would look at some other brands of Rice Chex alternatives to see if the sugar content is the same. First up – Great Value (Walmart’s own brand) Rice Squares which also contain 3g of total sugar per serving.

12. Signature Select Cereal Rice Pockets – 3g of Total Sugar

There are also 3g of total sugar per serving of Signature Select Cereal Rice Pockets.

13. Kroger Rice Bitz Cereal – 3g of Total Sugar

Yup – also 3g of total sugar per serving of Kroger Rice Bitz Cereal. I think it is safe to conclude that there are 3g of total sugar per serving of Rice Chex and Rice Chex alternatives.

How much sugar is in Chex and which Chex is the lowest in sugar? What have we learned from the above? Well, let’s start with the first question – how much sugar is in Chex? Depending on the variety of Chex you choose there can be between 3-10g of sugar per serving. The second question – what is the lowest sugar Chex cereal? The answer to this is clear. It is Rice Chex which comes in at 3g of sugar per serving. As for other alternatives on the market, I did not come across any sugar-free options with the lowest sugar alternative own-brand versions of Chex still being rice versions. All of which also contained 3g of total sugar.
