Does Ginger Ale contain much sugar? Okay, all you sugar-conscious ginger fans – this article is for you. Ginger Ale is that super unique warming soda with all the ginger notes. But exactly how much sugar is in ginger ale? That is the question I am going to be answering in this post.
Now, I have previously written an article before looking at some of the sugar-free ginger ales and beers out there (Are There Any Sugar-Free Ginger Beers & Ales) but in this post, I want to dig further into the sugar content specifically of ginger ales.
In order to answer this question, I looked at the sugar content of 5 of the most well-known ginger ale brands and compared their sugar content on a 12oz serving basis (I pro-rated the sugar content for any brands that provide their sugar content for a different serving size). I then managed to track down 6 lower-sugar and sugar-free ginger ales. So, you can have our ginger ale and drink it without any sugar).
Make sure to read right to the end to find out what my number 1 sugar-free ginger ale recommendation is.
Let’s dig in, does ginger ale contain much sugar, and are any sugar-free?

How Much Sugar is in Ginger Ale?
As a general rule, a 12oz can of ginger ale contains 25g-38g of sugar. Canada Dry, Schweppes, Zevia, Reed’s, and Ale 8 are some of the brands that make sugar-free ginger ales that contain 0g of sugar in a can. These ginger ales are instead sweetened with aspartame, acesulfame potassium, erythritol, sucralose, and/or monk fruit.
1. Vernors Gingerale Soda – 38g of Sugar
Vernors ginger ale (aka “the original ginger soda”) was the highest-sugar ginger ale I came across in my search, coming in at 38g of sugar in a 12oz can. Like most sodas Vernors ginger ale is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup.
2. Canada Dry Ginger Ale – 35g of Sugar
I can’t write a post on ginger ale and not talk about Canada Dry. Canada Dry must be the most well-recognized ginger ale brand. Just like Vernors it is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup but there is a tad less sugar at 35g of sugar in a 12oz can.
3. Seagram’s Ginger Ale – 33g of Sugar
There is a touch less sugar in Seagrams ginger ale, with a 12oz can containing 33g of sugar. Just like most other full-sugar ginger ales, it is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup.
4. Schweppes Ginger Ale – 33g of Sugar
Schweppes Ginger Ale has the same sugar content as Seagrams at 33g of sugar in a 12oz serving. The sweetened used is, you guessed it – high fructose corn syrup.
5. Fever-Tree Premium Ginger Ale – 25g of Sugar
Fever-Tree ginger ale was the lowest sugar non-diet ginger ale I came across in my search. There are 25g of sugar in a can. Bear in mind, some ginger ales can contain 50% more sugar than this. The sweetener used also isn’t high fructose corn syrup – sugar is used instead as the sweetener instead.
If a ginger ale with sugar-free sweeteners isn’t for you for whatever reason or you just want to avoid high fructose corn syrup Fever-Tree ginger ale could be an option for you.
6. Fever-Tree Refreshingly Light Ginger Ale – 16g of Sugar
Fever-Tree also makes a “refreshingly light” version of ginger ale. This refreshingly light ginger ale is sweetened with fructose (fruit sugar) and contains 16g of sugar per serving.

10. Reed’s Zero Sugar Real Ginger Ale – 0g of Sugar
Reed’s is another sugar-free ginger ale, with their ginger ale being sweetened with erythritol, stevia, and monk fruit. This ginger ale also has the bonus of being made with 2000mg of ginger (that’s a lotta ginger).
11. Ale 8 One Zero Sugar Ginger Ale – 0g of Sugar
The final sugar-free ginger ale I am going to let you know about comes from Ale 8. Ale 8’s zero-sugar ginger ale actually contains a caffeine kick along with a hint of citrus. Perfect for anyone looking for a slightly different sugar-free ginger ale, with a caffeine kick. This sugar-free ginger ale is sweetened with sucralose and acesulfame potassium.
