How Much Sugar are in Mints? Plus The Best Sugar Free Mints!

Mints. They can freshen your breath, you have them at the end of a meal, or get you in the mood for the Holiday Season (or do all at the same time for all you multi-taskers out there). But how much sugar exactly is in these little candies that pack a punch?  To answer that question, I randomly selected 12 mint brands and examined the sugar content on an individual mint basis. I selected starlight peppermints, “ring” mints, breath freshener mints, chewy mints, and sugar-free mints. Make sure to read to the end to find out which mints contain 0g of sugar. I have included Amazon links to all the 0g mints below (because I assume that is why you are here!).

Ranking Mint Brands – item-by-item

In this section, I will go through each of the above mint brands item-by-item ranking them on sugar content in descending order.

1. LaetaFood Arcor Starlight Peppermint Hard Candy – 3.7g of Total Sugar

First up, let’s have a look at how much sugar is in a peppermint starlight candy. You know those individually wrapped red and white striped circular peppermints that everybody seems to whip out during come holiday season. How much sugar is in them?

Well, LeataFood brands starlight peppermint candy is sweetened with sugar and glucose syrup and they contain 3.7g of total sugar per serving.

2. Lifesavers Peppermint Hard Candies – 3.5g of Total Sugar

Next are another peppermint candy, this time from well know mint brand Lifesavers. You know Lifesavers – the white mints with a hole in the middle. Well, each peppermint Lifesaver contains 3.5g of total sugar and the sweeteners used are sugar and corn syrup.

3. Brach’s Star Brites Peppermint Candy – 3.3g of Total Sugar

Next up are another peppermint starlight, this time from Brach’s. Brach’s starlight candies are sweetened with sugar and corn syrup (like so many candies are) and contain 3.3g of total sugar per starlight. So it seems safe to conclude that most peppermint starlight candies contain 3-point something grams of sugar per starlight.

4. Mentos Chewy Mint Candy Roll – 2g of Total Sugar

Okay, so I have looked at the sugar content of large hard mints, which tend to contain in the 3g-4g range of sugar per mint – but how about good old chewy mints?

How much sugar is in a chewy mint like Mentos?

Well, Mentos are sweetened with sugar, wheat syrup, and maltodextrin and contain 2g of sugar in each one of those chewy mints.

5. Altoids Classic Peppermint Breath Mints – 0.6g of Total Sugar

So far, I have looked at the sugar content of larger mints both chewy and hard, but how about the sugar content of some breath mints?

I mean they are pretty small so should be lower in sugar, right? Correct.

Altoids classic peppermint breath mints (you know those cute little metal tins of “curiously strong mints”) are sweetened with sugar yet only contain 0.6g of total sugar per mint.

This means you can freshen that breath without worrying about overconsuming sugar! Win-win.

For the remaining items, I will go through those sugar free mint brands available.

6.  Altoids Smalls Wintergreen Sugarfree Mints – 0g of Total Sugar

If that 0.6g of sugar per Altoids mint is still 0.6g of sugar too much for you, then I have some good news. Altoids also make a sugar free version of their breath mints.

These sugar free breath mints are sweetened with sorbitol, maltitol, and sucralose.  They contain 0g of total sugar per mint.

7. Tic Tacs Fresh Mints – 0g of Total Sugar

I couldn’t write an article on mints without talking about the cutest mints of all – Tic Tacs! You know – those tiny plastic containers of mints that everybody loves to give a good shake.

Tic Tacs are sweetened with sugar and maltodextrin, yet there is still 0g of sugar per tic tac. I mean the fact they are so tiny is obviously a big contributing factor in their 0g of sugar status.

8. Life Savers Sugar Free Breath Mints – 0g of Total Sugar

I talked about the sugar content of Life Savers mints above (the ring-shaped mints) and established that they contain 3.5g of sugar per Life Saver. If you are looking for a sugar free ring mint alternative, then I have some good news for you. Life Savers have a sugar free variety of their mints.

The sugar free Life Savers are sweetened with isomalt and sucralose and contain 0g of total sugar per mint.

9. Ice Breakers Coolmint with Cooling Crystals Sugar Free Mints – 0g of Total Sugar

Another day, another sugar free breath mint – this time from Ice Breakers. One thing that makes IceBreakers mints unique is the small “cooling crystals” found in their mints.

You can see what I mean on Amazon here. Ice Breakers sugar free mints are sweetened with sorbitol, maltitol, maltodextrin, and aspartame and there is 0g of total sugar per mint.

10. Mentos Clean Breath Hard Mints Sugar Free Candy – 0g of Total Sugar

I talked about Mentos chewy mints above which contain 2g of total sugar per chewy mint. Now whilst Mentos does not make a sugar free version of their chewy mints, they do make a sugar free breath mint.

11. Funtasty Sugar Free Peppermint Starlight Hard Candy – 0g of Total Sugar

The penultimate entry on my list comes from a candy company with an awesome name – Funtasty (get it?!). I actually have talked about Funtasty before in the post I wrote on the sugar content of peach rings, which you can read here – How Much Sugar is in Peach Rings Candy?

But anyway, back to all things minty.

These sugar free mints from Funtasty are actually of the starlight variety. I established above that starlight peppermints tend to contain 3.3g-3.7g of total sugar per mint. Funtasty sugar free mints in comparison contain 0g of sugar per mint. That is a definite win.

Funtasty sugar free starlight mints are sweetened with isomalt, maltitol syrup, and sucralose. This means if you love straight peppermints but hate sugar these are definitely for you.

12. Dr. John’s Healthy Sweets Sugar Free Peppermint Hard Candies – 0g of Total Sugar

The final sugar free mint I am going to talk about is from Dr. John’s.
