Is Bran Cereal high in sugar? Are there sugar-free options? Bran cereal. It’s the cereal we all reach for when we want to kick our days off with a high-fiber breakfast. It may be high in fiber but is bran cereal also high in sugar? And do any sugar-free bran cereals exist (spoiler alert – yes, they do – so read right to the end to find out about this). These are the questions I wanted to answer in this post and help you find the lowest sugar bran cereal out there.

In order to answer these questions, I have selected 9 bran cereals and collated the sugar content data per serving. I then put these bran cereals together in descending order of total sugar content per serving. I have looked at both bran flake cereals and the bran stick cereals too (you know the ones where the bran comes in long thing sticks instead of flakes).

Just note that the serving size of bran flakes tends to be one cup, but the serving sizes of the bran sticks tend to be a bit smaller due to it being a denser cereal. I adjusted for this where possible.

So, let’s dig in – is bran cereal high in sugar? Are there any sugar-free bran cereal options?

Is Bran Cereal High in Sugar - All Bran

Is Bran Cereal High in Sugar?

As a general rule, there can be as much as 9g of total sugar in a serving of Bran cereal and up to 19g of total sugar in a serving of raisin bran. However, low-sugar, fruit-sweetened, and sugar-free bran cereal options do exist.

Before I go on, if you want to learn more about the sugar content of various cereals then make sure to check out the following posts I wrote –

Is Bran Cereal High in Sugar - Raisin Nut Bran

1. General Mills Raisin Nut Bran – 19g of Total Sugar

The highest sugar Bran cereal I came across in this experiment was raisin bran. I mean that does pretty much make sense as raisins are high in naturally occurring sugar (just see my post on dried fruit and you will see for yourself – Which Dried Fruits Are The Highest in Sugar and Which Are The Lowest).

However, I was still a bit surprised when I examined the sugar content of General Mills Raisin Nut Bran – there are 19g of total sugar in a cup serving with 14g of these being added sugar. That means just 5g of the sugars are naturally occurring from the raisins.

2. 365 by Whole Foods Market Raisin Bran Cereal – 15g of Total Sugar

The next entry is of course another raisin bran. There isn’t quite as much sugar in 365 by Whole Foods Market’s Raisin Bran – there are 15g of total sugar in a cup serving. 8g of these sugars are added. This means around half the sugar is naturally occurring from the raisins.

Basically, the moral of the story is – if you want a lower-sugar Bran cereal avoid raisin bran.

3. All Bran Original – 9g of Total Sugar

Now onto the OG of Bran cereals – All Bran Original. You know that little stick like bran cereal. So, what’s the sugar content? Well, first up the serving size is a little smaller than bran flakes (the stick-like bran cereals tend to have a smaller recommended serving size – I suppose because it is denser than the flakes). There are 9g of total sugar in a 2/3 cup serving of All Bran Original. Unlike raisin bran, most of this sugar is added – 8g of added sugar to be precise.

4. Nature’s Path Smart Bran Cereal – 8g Of Total Sugar

Nature’s Path Bran cereal is made up more of tiny bran nuggets rather than sticks. It is also made of a mixture of wheat, psyllium, and oat bran.  There are 8g of total sugar per 3/4 cup serving of Nature’s Path Smart Bran Cereal – all 8g of these sugars are added.

5. All Bran Complete Wheat Flakes – 7g of Total Sugar

I established above that All Bran’s stick cereal contains 9g of total sugar per serving. But how about their flake bran cereal? Well, this is a touch lower in sugar. There are 7g of total sugar per cup serving of All Bran Wheat Flakes, 6g of which are added sugar.

6. Grain Berry Cereal Multi-Bran Flakes with Onyx Sorghum – 5g of Total Sugar

Grain Berry Multi Bran Flakes with Onyx Sorghum is a bran flake option with a touch less sugar. This cereal comes in at 5g of sugar per 3/4 cup to be precise.
