Shredded Wheat. It’s the breakfast cereal we all turn to, or feed our kids, when we want a lower sugar cereal. But hang on, is Shredded Wheat actually low in sugar? In order to answer this question, I have selected 10 Shredded Wheat cereals and Shredded Wheat alternatives and collated the total sugar content per serving. The Shredded Wheat cereals I selected range from mini ones, the big ones, frosted ones, and flavored ones. I have put the results together in the following list in descending order of total sugar content, so make sure to read right to the end to find out about the lowest sugar Shredded Wheat options (spoiler alert – they are low!).
Is Shredded Wheat Low In Sugar?
Plain Shredded Wheat does not contain sugar – there are 0g of total sugar in a serving of plain Shredded Wheat. Sweetened, frosted or flavored Shredded Wheat alternatives do contain sugar – usually around 7g-12g per serving.

The Sugar Content of Shredded Wheat Cereals and Alternatives
1. Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats – 12g of Total Sugar
Ok, so first up is Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats – it probably shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that this Wheat option made it to the top of this list for sugar content – I mean frosted basically means sugar coated. There are 12g of total sugar per serving of Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats – which is a similar sugar content to many sweetened cereals (for example, Lucky Charms and Cocoa Puffs.
2. Mom’s Best Cereal Blue Pom Wheatfuls – 12g of Total Sugar
Mom’s Best Cereal Blue Pom Wheatfuls also contains 12g of total sugar per serving. Again, this isn’t a huge surprise – most flavored cereals tend to be higher in sugar than the plain versions (in this case blueberry).
3. Kashi Berry Fruitful Organic Promise Cereal – 9g of Total Sugar
Kashi Berry Fruitful Organic Promise Cereal is a fruit Shredded Wheat alternative cereal that is a touch lower in sugar, coming in at 9g per serving.
4. Kashi Cinnamon Harvest Organic Promise Cereal – 9g of Total Sugar
It is the same sugar situation of Kashi Harvest Organic Promise Cereal – 9g of total sugar per serving.
5. Kashi Autumn Wheat Organic Promise Cereal – 7g of Total Sugar
Kashi’s Autumn Wheat Organic Promise Organic Cereal also clocks in 9g of total sugar. I think at this point it is safe to assume that flavored Shredded Wheat cereal alternatives are higher in sugar content.
6. Post Original Shredded Wheat – 0g of Total Sugar
Ok, so now I am onto the OG in the Shredded Wheat World and that is…well, Shredded Wheat. Post’s Original Shredded Wheat is completely unsweetened and contains 0g of total sugar per serving. Pass me a bowl of Shredded Wheat Now!
7. Post Big Biscuit Shredded Wheat – 0g of Total Sugar
The big Shredded Wheat biscuits are also completely sugar free! 0g of sugar per serving baby! 8. Post Wheat N Bran Shredded Wheat – 0g of Total Sugar
There is a third variety of Shredded Wheat and that is Wheat N Bran. Well, guess what? It is also sugar free!
9. Great Value Shredded Wheat Cereal – 0g of Total Sugar
Ok, so far I have established that there are 0g of total sugar per serving of all three of Post’s Shredded Wheat varieties. But is it also the case that there is no sugar in other brands’ equivalents of plain Shredded Wheat? Well, I selected a few brand equivalents of plain Shredded Wheat to find out. First up is Great Value (Walmart’s own brand) Shredded Wheat Cereal, which yup contains 0g of sugar per serving.
10. Grain Berry Shredded Wheat – 0g of Total Sugar
I also looked at the sugar content of Grain Berry Shredded Wheat (a brand I also looked at in the post I wrote on the sugar content of bran cereals, which you can read here – insert bran cereal post). There are…you guessed it – 0g of sugar per serving in Grain Berry Shredded Wheat. So, it seems pretty safe to conclude that as a general rule, plain Shredded Wheat is sugar free. It is just the flavored and frosted Shredded Wheats you need to avoid if you are watching your sugar intake.

Is Shredded Wheat low in sugar? What have we learned from the above? Well, not all Shredded Wheat cereals are equal, especially in the sugar department. Basically, if you are watching your sugar intake then avoid any frosted or flavored Shredded Wheat cereals as they tend to contain 7g-12g of sugar per serving. However, plain Shredded Wheat contains 0g of sugar. So, plain Shredded Wheat is a great sugar free cereal option.
