Is Cashew Butter high in sugar? In this post, I am going to rank the sugar content of 12 different brands of cashew butter. Now, normally cashew butter is made by blending cashews with some form of oil. The result is the thick butter spread we are all familiar with. This mixture can then be sweetened or unsweetened depending on the brand. Most of us will be familiar with peanut butter. Cashew butter, whilst similar in style, is much creamier and richer in taste and profile (in my opinion). So if you are a fan of cashews it can be a great option. But, what exactly is the sugar content of some cashew butter brands, and how much sugar is there in cashew butter?
What is the Sugar Content of Cashew Butter?
As a general rule, most plain cashew butters are unsweetened and contain 0g-2g of total sugar per 2 tablespoon serving. Flavored cashew butters such as vanilla, chocolate, or caramel cashew butters tend to contain added sugar and as a general rule contain 3g-6g of total sugar per 2 tablespoon serving.
Summary Table – Sugar Content of Cashew Butter
Cashew butter – it’s peanut butter and almond butter’s slightly less popular (but no less delicious) cousin. But is it high in sugar? To answer this question, I have selected 12 cashew butters at random and looked at the total sugar content per 2 tablespoons serving as well as whether sugar is added.

Below is a summary of 12 different brands of cashew butter ranked on sugar content. For each brand, I list the added sugar content per serving and the total sugar content per serving. A serving here is 2 tablespoons. As you can see from the table a lot of brands (9 out of the 12 listed) are unsweetened and contain 0g of added sugars.

Cashew Butter Brands Ranked For Sugar Content – item-by-item
In this section, I will go through each of the 12 cashew butter brands I listed in the table above item by item.
1. Kevala Cashew Butter – 0g of Total Sugar
The lowest sugar cashew butter I came across in my search comes from Kevala. Kevala cashew butter is added sugar free and contains 0g of total sugar per 2-tablespoon serving. This cashew butter comes in a bulk 3.5lb tub.
If you are looking for a low sugar cashew butter, then you really can’t beat Kevala at 0g of total sugar per serving. You can find Kevala cashew butter on Amazon here.
2. Spread The Love Basic Cashew Butter – 1g of Total Sugar
Another very low sugar cashew butter I came across comes from Spread The Love. Before I go into the sugar content can we please just take a minute to appreciate what an awesome name this brand has? Spread The Love cashew butter is added sugar free and only contains 1g of total sugar per 2-tablespoon serving. You can find Spread the Love cashew butter on Amazon here.
3. 365 by Whole Foods Market Creamy Cashew Butter – 1g of Total Sugar
I have talked about 365 by Whole Foods Market here at Low Sugar Snax many times before. And for good reason – the 365 brand carries many awesome added sugar free products. Their cashew butter is no exception – it is added sugar free and contains just 1g of total sugar per 2-tablespoon serving. You can find 365’s cashew butter on Amazon here.
4. Jiva Organics Raw Organic Cashew Butter – 1g of Total Sugar
Next up is Jiva cashew butter. I love the fact that Jiva cashew butter is organic and raw. Oh, and it is added sugar free and contains 1g of total sugar per serving. You can find this awesome raw cashew butter on Amazon here.
5. Maisie Jane’s Organic Cashew Butter – 1.7g of Total Sugar
Maisie Jane’s organic cashew butter is made in the USA by a small family farm. There is also no added sugar and 1.7g of total sugar per 2-tablespoon serving. You can check this organic cashew butter out for yourself on Amazon here.
6. Vör All Natural Cashew Butter – 2g of Total Sugar
Next, we have a cashew butter with no added sugar and 2g of total sugar per serving. Vör all-natural cashew butter also has the benefit of being Paleo, Keto, and Whole30 approved. You can buy Vör cashew butter on Amazon here.
7. Octonuts Dry Roasted Pure Cashew Butter – 2g of Total Sugar
Another cashew butter that contains 2g of total sugar per serving is from Octonuts. Octonuts is “made with love in California” and can be found on Amazon here.
8. Once Again Organic Creamy Cashew Butter – 2g of Total Sugar

Well, Once Again cashew butter is also added sugar free and contains just 2g of total sugar per serving. This cashew butter also has the benefit of being organic and gluten-free certified.

9. Artisana Organics Raw Cashew Butter – 2g of Total Sugar
Next is another raw organic cashew butter, this time from Artisana. Artisana raw cashew butter is added sugar free and contains 2g of total sugar per serving.

This Artisanal raw cashew butter marks the final added sugar free cause butter on this list.
10. American Dream Cashew Butter – 3g of Total Sugar
Next up is the first cashew butter on this list that contains added sugar. American Dream Cashew Butter consists of “decadent vanilla frosting flavored cashew butter topped with crushed gluten-free vanilla cookies and rainbow nonpareils.” Wow. Their slogan is “dunk a spoon” which kind of says it all.
This cashew butter contains stevia, sugar, and tapioca syrup. There are 3g of total sugar per 2 tablespoon serving, 2g of which are added. To be fair, for such a decadent cashew butter, 3g of sugar per serving is actually still pretty low. This will be due to the fact that stevia is used as well as sugar.
11. Octonuts Dry Roasted Sea Salt Caramel Cashew Butter – 5g of Total Sugar
I mentioned above that Octonuts dry roasted cashew butter is unsweetened and only contains 2g of total sugar per serving (see entry number 7 above). But how about their more indulgent sea salt caramel cashew butter? Well, this cashew butter is sweetened with coconut sugar and contains 5g of total sugar per serving, 3g of which is added sugar.
12. Artisana Organics Cashew Cacao Spread – 6g of Total Sugar
The highest-sugar cashew butter I came across in my search is Artisanal cashew cacao spread. I mean it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that chocolate cashew butter is higher in sugar content than plain cashew butter. This cashew cacao spread is sweetened with both organic sucrose and organic coconut sugar. There are 6g of total sugar per serving – 4g of which are added.
My Personal Choice?
It’s got to be Kevala cashew butter. I mean you can’t beat 0g of total sugar per serving. You can find Kevala cashew butter on Amazon here.
In the second place, would be the 365 by Whole Foods Cashew Butter. This is mostly because this cashew butter is easy to find in Whole Foods stores and it is at a good price point.
Lastly, I would recommend Vör (entry number 6). I have used these before for bulk purposes with work and have always been impressed with the quality and taste. Vör also offers consumer versions that are perfect for the kitchen.
Is Cashew Butter High In Sugar? – The Final Bite
Is Cashew Butter high in sugar? To answer that question, I can tell you that cashew butter is not high in sugar. As you will see from my list above most of the cashew butters available contain 0g of added sugar and range from 0g to 6g of total sugar per serving. Now, if you are watching your sugar intake then you will want to pick Kevala Cashew Butter which contains 0g of total sugar. However, you should know that most no-added sugar brands of Cashew Butter on the list also only contain up to 2g of sugar per serving.
