Froot Loops. The colorful o-shaped cereal that kids adore and comes in a cartoon toucan on the packaging. Froot Loops are full of color that is for sure – but are Froot Loops also high in sugar? And more importantly does a sugar free Froot Loop alternative exist? Let’s find out. In order to answer this question have examined the total sugar content of a cup serving of Froot Loop (before milk) plus 9 Froot Loop alternatives and put the results together in descending order of sugar content per cup serving. I have pro-rated the sugar content where necessary (ie where the brand nutritional information defines a serving as different from one cup). So, let’s dig in – are Froot Loops high in sugar? 1. First Street Cereal Fruit Whirls – 15g of Total Sugar
The highest sugar Froot Loops Equivalent brand I came across in this experiment is from First Street (you know – Smart N Final’s Own Brand). There are 19g of total sugar in a serving of First Street Fruit Whirls – however, they define a serving as 1 1/4 cup. So pro-rated to 1 cup (to keep the comparison fair) equates to 15g of total sugar in a cup serving.
Still makes it the highest sugar Froot Loops alternative on this list.
2. Chestnut Hill Fruity Hoops – 13g of Total Sugar
Next up is Chestnut Hill Fruity Hoops (Family Dollar’s Own Brand dupe of Froot Loops). Like First Street’s equivalent, there are 19g of sugar in a serving. However, Chestnut Hill defines a serving as even bigger – 1.5 cups to be precise. So prorated to 1 cup equates to 13g of sugar.
3. Great Value Fruit Spin Loops – 13g of Total Sugar
It is the same sugar situation with Great Value’s branded equivalent – Fruit Spin Loops. Pro rated to one cup equals 13g of total sugar.
4. Kroger Fruit Rings Family Size Cereal – 13g of Total Sugar
Another day, another Froot Loop equivalent that contains 13g of sugar in a cup serving. Just like Great Value and Chestnut Hill’s brands, there are 19g of sugar in a 1.5 cup serving of Kroger’s Fruit Rings. Pro rated to 1 cup equals 13g of sugar.
5. Golden Foods Fruit Loops Cereal – 12g of Total Sugar
There is a touch less sugar in a cup serving of Golden Foods Fruit Loops – 12g to be precise! No pro-rating is required.
6. Canadian Farm Organic Fruitful O’s – 11g of Total Sugar
Canadian Farm Fruitful Os any be organic, but they aren’t the lowest sugar Froot Loop alternative on this list. There are 11g of total sugar per cup serving of Canadian Farm Organic Fruitful Os.
7. Millville Fruit Rounds – 10g of Total Sugar
Next up is ALDI’s own brand’s (Millville) Froot Loop alternative and that is Fruit Rounds. There are 13g of sugar in a 1 and 1/3 cup serving of Millville’s Fruit Rounds – prorated to 1 cup equals 10g of sugar.
8. Froot Loops – 9g of Total Sugar
Okay, finally I have reached the OG – Froot Loops themselves! Can you believe that Froot Loops are lower in sugar than most of copycat own-brand equivalents! Yes, that’s right – there are 9g of total sugar in a cup serving of Froot Loops. The nutritional labels label them as containing 12g in a 1 and 1/3 cup serving – but prorated to 1 cup equals 9g. I have to be honest I was fairly surprised by this – I was expecting Froot Loops to have a higher sugar content than this.
