What is the average amount of sugar in ice cream? Ice cream. We all love it, but exactly how much sugar is the creamy stuff? Well, in this post we will be looking at the average amount of sugar in ice cream. In order to answer this question, I have selected 4 of the big brands of pints of ice cream (Ben & Jerry’s, Häagen Dazs, Baskin-Robbins, and Bluebell) and I have collated the total sugar content of a 2/3 cup serving of every flavor of dairy ice cream these brands carry. Putting this all together means we should be able to draw some general conclusions about the sugar content of ice cream.
Just as an FYI, this post focuses on regular dairy ice creams. I will be dealing with low-sugar ice creams, sorbets, sherbets, and dairy-free ice creams in separate posts.
Let’s dig in – what is the average amount of sugar in ice cream?
What is the Average Amount of Sugar in Ice Cream?
As a general rule, there are 17g-38g of total sugar in a 2/3 cup serving of dairy ice cream. The average sugar content of Ben & Jerry’s is 34g, Häagen Dazs is 30g, Baskin-Robbins is 21g, and Bluebell is 24g. This makes the average total sugar content in a 2/3 cup serving of ice cream 27g of sugar.
Classic flavors such as pistachio, vanilla, coffee, butter pecan, peanut butter, and chocolate tend to be lowest in sugar.
Ben & Jerry’s
What Is the Average Amount of Sugar in Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream?
I have previously written a post that ranks all 75 Ben & Jerry’s flavors on total sugar content per 2/3 cup serving. You can read this post here – 75 Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Flavors Ranked For Sugar Content.
Below I have collated all of Ben & Jerry’s dairy ice creams (i.e. not including its dairy-free ice cream). On a side note, as a general rule, dairy-free ice cream does tend to contain less sugar than dairy ice cream. You can read more about it here – Lower Sugar Dairy-Free Ice Creams You Need To Try!
As you can see, there are 26g-38g of total sugar in a 2/3 cup serving of Ben & Jerry’s. The average amount of total sugar in a 2/3 cup of Ben & Jerry’s is 34g of total sugar in a 2/3 cup serving. This does make Ben & Jerry’s a higher-sugar ice cream.
This probably doesn’t come as a huge surprise as Ben & Jerry’s USP is their add-ins e.g., the cookie dough, caramel, brownie pieces, etc. Note that the lowest sugar Ben & Jerry’s flavors are the simple non add-in flavors such as pistachio, vanilla, cold brew, and peanut butter.
Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Weighs More
It is also worth pointing out that a 2/3 cup of Ben & Jerry’s weighs a lot more than a lot of other ice cream brands. For example, a 2/3 cup of Ben & Jerry’s weighs 141g whereas 2/3 cup of Baskin-Robbins (see below) weighs 98g. This is probably due to less overrun (i.e., air being added to Ben & Jerry’s ice creams plus the weight of the add ins). But this may mean that you eat less (on a cup basis) of Ben & Jerry’s before feeling satisfied compared to other ice cream brands.

As a general rule, a 2/3 cup of Häagen-Dazs contains 22g-38g of total sugar. The average amount of total sugar in a 2/3 cup serving of Häagen-Dazs is 30g. Classic Häagen-Dazs flavors such as butter pecan, pistachio, coffee, vanilla, chocolate, and cookies & cream contain lower amounts of sugar (22g-25g of sugar). It is interesting that coffee, vanilla, and pistachio flavors are lower sugar flavors for both Ben & Jerry’s and Häagen-Dazs.
In comparison, Häagen-Dazs seasonal flavors, spirit flavors, and more indulgent flavors, on average, contain more sugar (up to 44g per serving).

Sugar In Ice Cream F&Q
Is There A Lot Of Sugar In Ice Cream?
Ice cream can be fairly high in sugar. There are 17g-38g of total sugar in a 2/3 cup serving of dairy ice cream.
What Is The Average Amount Of Sugar In Ice Cream? – The Final Bite
What is the average amount of sugar in ice cream? What have we learned from the above? Well, when it comes to ice cream you can expect to find a sugar content of 17g to 38g of total sugar per serving. If you are looking for the lowest sugar option, then out of the four main brands I mention above Baskin-Robbins looks like the best option. Offering a total sugar content range of 17g to 25g of sugar per serving (depending on the flavor you chose). This is the lowest sugar range when compared to the other brands listed. Who would have known? Finally, the flavor you pick obviously makes a big difference. If you are trying to reduce your sugar intake, then avoid any flavors with add-ins or chunks. These tend to be higher in sugar no matter what brand makes them.
And Remember…
Ingredients and/or manufacturing processes may change. Always double-check ingredient lists and nutritional information before purchasing any food items.
