Which has less sugar – Heavy Cream or Half Half? Half half and heavy cream. They are both creamy dairies that are often splashed into coffee. Now I have already written articles examining the sugar content of different creamers, but how about if you like to keep it simple with your coffee and add either half half or heavy cream? Which is lower in sugar? That is the questions I am going to be answering in this post.

In order to answer this question, I have examined the sugar content of 5 half half and 5 heavy creams. So, let’s dig in – which contains less sugar? Heavy Cream or half half? Oh, and if you are wondering at this point what “half half” is let me tell you. Half Half is a mixture of half whole milk and half cream.

What contains more sugar – Heavy Cream or Half Half?

As a general rule, both half half and heavy cream are added sugar-free. Half half tends to contain 1g of naturally occurring sugar per serving whereas heavy cream tends to contain 0g of naturally occurring sugar per serving. This is because milk contains higher levels of lactose than cream – lactose is the natural sugar found in milk.

How Much Sugar is in Half Half?

Before I continue, let’s just establish what half half is. Half half is basically half milk and half cream. Heavy cream is just heavy cream. It is also referred to as heavy whipping cream.

1. Organic Valley Half & Half – 1g of Sugar

First up let’s look at Organic Valley’s half half. Like most half half Organic Valley half half does not contain added sugar. As such it has 0g of added sugar per 30ml serving. There is, however, 1g of total sugar per serving and this is from the lactose in milk’s naturally occurring sugar.

2. Horizon Organic Half & Half – 1g of Sugar

The sugar content of Horizon’s organic half half is the same – no added sugar but 1g of total sugar per 30ml serving.

3. 365 by Whole Foods Market Half and Half – 1g of Sugar

Just like the other two half half we have looked at so far, 365’s organic half half is added sugar-free yet contains 1g of total sugar per 30ml serving. I am starting to see a trend here.

4. Clover Sonoma Organic Half & Half – 1g of Sugar

Clover Sonoma organic half half contains (you guessed it) 0g of added sugar and 1g of total sugar per 30ml serving.

5. Califia Farms Unsweetened Better Half, Half and Half Substitute – 0g of Sugar

I think it is safe to say that there is 1g of total sugar per 30ml servings of half half. But how about if you had your heart set on a 0g of total sugar option?

Well, a solution could be a vegan half half.

This unsweetened half half from Califia Farms is made from almond milk and coconut cream. There is 0g of added sugar and 0g of total sugar per serving.

Okay, so I have established that half half tends to contain 0g of added sugar and 1g of total sugar per 30ml serving. But how about heavy cream? How much sugar is in heavy cream?

6. 365 by Whole Foods Market Organic Heavy Cream – 0g of Sugar

Let’s start with 365 by Whole Foods Market organic heavy cream. There are 0g of added sugar and 0g of total sugar per serving. Although it is interesting that the serving size is half that of a typical half half serving size.

The serving size for heavy cream tends to be 15ml yet the serving size for half half is 30ml. This just be because heavy cream is so much thicker, and half the amount is needed.

7. Clover Sonoma Organic Heavy Cream – 0g of Sugar

There is also 0g of added sugar and 0g of total sugar per 15ml servings of Clover Sonoma organic heavy cream.

8. Organic Valley Organic Heavy Whipping Cream – 0g of Sugar

Just like the other heavy creams in this article, there are 0g of added sugar and 0g total sugar per 15ml serving of Organic Valley heavy cream.

9. Alexandre Family Farms Organic Heavy Whipping Cream – 0g of Sugar

The sugar content of Alexandre Family Farms organic heavy whipping cream is 0g of total sugar per 15ml serving.

10. Silk Dairy Free Heavy Whipping Cream – 0g of Sugar

As I looked at the sugar content of a vegan half half I thought it only fair to look at the sugar content of a vegan heavy cream. Silk dairy-free heavy whipping cream is made from coconut and fava bean protein and contains 0g of total sugar per 15ml serving.

Now, this isn’t to assume that heavy cream is “better for you” as it will still contain higher fats however if you are looking to lower your sugar content and need to pick between the two then heavy cream may be the better “lower sugar” option. However, there are plenty of plant-based half half creamers around which also offer 0g of sugar per serving. For example, if you are trying to reduce your sugar intake and want a half half I would recommend Califa Farms’ unsweetened half half. Win.
