How much sugar is in gelato? Gelato. It’s that creamy frozen dessert that is super popular with origins in Italy. But how much sugar is in gelato and how is it different from ice cream? In order to answer this question, I have put together the sugar content data for a serving of every flavor of America’s favorite gelato… Talenti of course. Talenti completely and utterly dominates the gelato market here in the USA, so it makes sense to look at the sugar content of Talenti gelatos in order to answer this question.
So, let’s dig in, how much sugar is in gelato?
How Much Sugar is in Gelato?
As a general rule there are 25g-39g of total sugar in a 2/3 cup of gelato. Talenti’s coffee gelato is their lowest sugar gelato, whereas their chocolate and mint flavors are their highest sugar gelato.

What is the Difference Between Gelato and Ice Cream?
Ever wonder what the difference is between gelato and ice cream? Well, let me tell you. The difference comes down to the ingredients used. Whilst both are types of “ice cream” traditional Gelato will use less butterfat and cream with a focus on milk instead. It is also churned at slower speeds to create a thicker and dense ice cream style.

How Much Sugar is in Gelato? You will Surprised! – The Final Bite
How much sugar is in Gelato? What have we learned from the above? Well, when it comes to frozen desserts gelato is not the lowest frozen dessert option. Gelato, on average, contains more sugar than ice cream, but not as high as sorbets. Sorbets are the highest-sugar frozen dessert option. If you are looking for the lowest sugar gelato option in grocery stores, then chocolate and mint-based flavors tend to be the highest and coffee or pistachio the lowest. However, always double-check the labels.
The main disadvantage of gelato is that there are no low-sugar options available like there are for ice cream. There are plenty of ice cream flavors and brands that are specifically marketed as being “low sugar”. Don’t believe me – just read my post Which Ice Creams Contain No Sugar? Sadly, something that doesn’t currently exist for gelato-styled options.
And Remember…
Ingredients and/or manufacturing processes may change. Always double-check ingredient lists and nutritional information before purchasing any food items.
