Which Lactose Free Milk Contains the Least Sugar?

Which lactose free milk contains the least sugar? Lactose free milk. It’s the dairy milk that has lactase added which breaks down lactose and makes it easier to digest. But exactly how much sugar is in lactose milk and which lactose free milk contains the least sugar? That is the question I will be answering in this post.

In order to answer this question, I examined the sugar content of 10 lactose free kinds of milk, including Whole, 2%, 1%, and Fat-Free milk. This was to gather some general rules about the sugar content of lactose free milk and see if it is lower in sugar than regular lactose milk. Then I present you with a lactose free brand that contains 50% of the sugar content of regular lactose free milk, so make sure to read to the end to find out what it is.

Before we continue, I want to clarify one thing. Lactose free dairy milk, so long as it is not flavored, never contains added sugar. The sugar contents I talk about below are all naturally occurring sugar.

So, let’s dig in – which lactose free milk contains the least sugar?

How Much Sugar is in Lactose Free Milk?

As a general rule, there is 0g of added sugar and 12g-13g of tomato sugar per 240ml serving of lactose free milk. This is not too different from regular milk which tends to contain 11g-15g of sugar per serving. There is a lactose free milk brand that contains 50% less sugar at 6g per serving.

To answer this question of how much sugar is in Lactose Free Milk I have examined the sugar content of several Whole, 2%, 1%, and Fat-Free lactose free kinds of milk.

How Much Sugar is in Lactose Free Whole Milk?

1. Clover Sonoma Lactose Free Whole Milk – 12g of Sugar

First up is Clover Sonoma lactose free whole milk. There are 12g of total sugar per serving. If you have read the post I wrote on which milk contains the least sugar (Which Milk Has The Least Amount Of Sugar?) you will have seen that Clover Sonoma’s regular whole milk also contains 12g of sugar.

This means so far being lactose free doesn’t appear to compact the milk’s total sugar content.

2. Lactaid Whole Milk – 12g of Sugar

Lactaid whole milk also contains 12g of total sugar per serving. Again, it seems like lactose free whole milk tends to contain around 12g of total sugar per serving.

In comparison in the post, I wrote looking at the sugar content of regular kinds of milk that contain lactose (Which Milk Has The Least Amount Of Sugar?) I concluded that whole milk tends to contain 11g-12g of total sugar per serving – so pretty much the same.

It seems that as a general rule there is 12g of total sugar per serving of lactose free whole milk.

How Much Sugar is in Lactose Free 2% Milk?

3. Organic Valley Lactose Free 2% Milk – 12g of Sugar

There are also 12g of sugar in Organic Valley’s lactose free 2% milk. Organic Valley’s regular 2% milk contains 13g of sugar per serving (you can read more about it here – Which Milk Has The Least Amount of Sugar?). This means the sugar content of regular lactose and lactose free kinds of milk are pretty similar.

4. Lactaid 2% Reduced Fat Milk – 12g of Sugar

Lactaid 2% milk also contains 12g of total sugar per serving.

5. Clover Sonoma Lactose Free 2% Reduced Fat Milk – 12g of Sugar

It is the same situation with Clover Sonoma’s lactose free 2% milk, which contains 12g of total sugar per serving. Clover Sonoma’s regular lactose continuing 2% milk contains 13g of sugar per serving, so no significant difference.

It seems that most lactose free 2% milks contain 12g of total sugar per serving. In comparison, there tends to be 13g-14g of total sugar per serving of regular 2% milk.

How Much Sugar is in Lactose Free 1% Milk?

6. Lactaid 1% Milk – 12g of Sugar

There are 12g of total sugar in a serving of Lactaid 1% milk. I am definitely seeing a trend here in the sugar content of Lactose Free Milks.

7. Lucerne 1% Milk – 12g of Sugar

There is also 12g of total sugar per serving of Lucerne 1% milk.

8. Great Value Lactose Free 1% Milk – 12g of Sugar

In Great Value (you know – Walmart’s brand) there are 12g of sugar per serving.

As a general rule, there tends to be 12g of total sugar per serving of lactose free 1% milk. This is slightly less than regular 1% milk which tends to contain 15g of total sugar per serving (you can read more about it here – Which Milk Has The Least Amount Of Sugar?).

How Much Sugar is in Lactose Free Fat Free Milk?

9. Organic Valley Lactose Free Fat Free Milk – 13g of Sugar

Shock horror – there is ever so slightly more naturally occurring sugar in Organic Valley lactose free and fat-free milk at 13g per serving. Mind blown. This is pretty similar to the sugar content of Organic Valley’s regular fat-free milk which contains 12g of total sugar per serving.

10. Lactaid Fat Free Milk – 12g of Sugar

Lactaid fat-free milk contains 12g of total sugar per serving.

As a general rule, there are 12g-13g of total sugar per serving of lactose free and fat-free milk. In comparison, there tends to be 11g-12g of total sugar in regular fat-free milk.

What Lactose Free Milk Contains the Least Sugar?

There is a lactose free milk that contains 50% less sugar. Yes, you read that correctly – just 6g of total sugar per 240ml serving.

This brand is Fairlife!

You can find Fairlife’s website here. Fairlife makes lactose free whole, 2%, and fat-free milks (just not a 1% variety).  There are 6g of total sugar in all these lactose free milks.
