Is cherry juice high in sugar? Cherry juice. It’s that sweet rich red juice that is full of antioxidants and oh so yummy. Cherries and by relation cherry juice are definitely one of my favorite juices out there. But exactly how much sugar does pure cherry juice contain? Is tart cherry juice higher in sugar than black cherry juice? Is sugar added to cherry juice or is it all naturally occurring? Fear not – I will be answering all these questions in this post.
Well, in order to answer these very pressing questions I randomly selected 12 cherry juices (both black and tart) and observed the total sugar content per 8oz serving. I then put these 12 cherry juices into descending order of total sugar content. That means you need to make sure to read right to the end to find out about the lowest-sugar cherry juice I came across.
So, let’s dig in – is cherry juice high in sugar?
Is Cherry Juice High in Sugar?
As a general rule there are 24g-42g of total sugar and 0g of added sugar in an 8oz serving of pure cherry juice. There is not a huge difference in sugar content between dark cherry and tart cherry juice.

1. Pomona Organic Pure Black Cherry Juice – 42g of Total Sugar
The highest-sugar cherry juice I came across in my search was Pomona Organic Black Cherry juice. This cherry juice contains 42g of total sugar (i.e., naturally occurring) and 0g of added sugar per 8oz serving. Funnily enough, this was also the juice with some of the most natural credentials – their cherry juice is all organic, cold-pressed, not from concentrate, etc.
However, if total sugar content is the critical that matters to you most opt for one of the lower sugar cherry juices below.
2. Simple Truth 100% Tart Cherry Juice – 35g of Total Sugar
Next up is a tart cherry juice from Simple Truth. Just like the above cherry juice, there is no added sugar in this cherry juice. There are 35g of total sugar in an 8oz serving of Simple Truth Tart Cherry Juice.
3. 365 by Whole Foods Market Organic Tart Cherry Juice – 35g of Total Sugar
It is the same sugar situation with the organic tart cherry juice from 365 by Whole Foods Market. There are 35g of total sugar and 0g of added sugar per 8oz serving.
4. Lakewood Pure Black Cherry Juice – 33g of Total Sugar
I talked above about Pomona black cherry juice which contains 42g of naturally occurring sugar per 8oz serving. Well, Lakewood Pure Black Cherry Juice is also a pure black cherry juice but contains 9g less total sugar per serving, coming in at 33g of sugar.
5. R.W. Knudsen Just Black Cherry Juice – 33g of Total Sugar
There is also 33g of total sugar in R.W. Knudsen’s Just Black Chery Juice. Keep reading to find out how much sugar is in R.W. Knudsen tart cherry juice.
6. Great Value Organic 100% Tart Cherry – 30g of Total Sugar
Great Value is Walmart’s own brand, and its 100% tart cherry juice contains 30g of total sugar and 0g of added sugar per 8oz serving. Read on to find out the sugar content of Great Value’s black cherry juice (as you may have guessed it is lower).
7. Juicy Juice 100% Cherry Juice – 27g of Total Sugar
Next up is a cherry juice from a popular juice brand – Juicy Juice. Juicy Juice 100% cherry juice doesn’t contain any added sugar and 27g of total sugar per 8oz serving.
8. R.W. Knudsen Just Tart Cherry Juice – 26g of Total Sugar
I established above that R.W. Knudsen’s black cherry juice contains 33g of total sugar per serving. But how about their tart cherry juice? Well, it contains 7g less total sugar per 8oz serving, coming in at 26g of total sugar. However, don’t be too quick in drawing conclusions that black cherry juice is always higher in sugar than tart cherry juice – see Great Value black cherry juice below!
9. Great Value Organic Black Cherry 100% Juice – 25g of Total Sugar
I found it interesting that Great Value’s black cherry juice contains less sugar than their tart cherry juice. Their black cherry juice contains 25g of sugar, compared to its tart cherry which contains 30g of sugar.
I would have guessed that black cherry juice would always be higher in sugar than tart cherry juice (like is the case with R.W. Knudsen cherry juices) but this clearly isn’t always the case.
10. Cherry Bay Orchards Tart Cherry Juice – 25g of Total Sugar
It is the same sugar situation with Cherry Bay Orchards Tart Cherry Juice – 0g of added sugar and 25g of total sugar per serving.
11. Sprouts 100% Tart Cherry Juice From Concentrate – 25g of Total Sugar
Sprouts cherry juice has exactly the same sugar content at 25g of sugar per 8oz serving.
12. Ocean Spray Pure Unsweetened Tart Cherry – 24g of Total Sugar
The final entry on this list is my number one recommendation for pure no sugar or sweetener-added cherry juice. That cherry juice is Ocean Spray’s 100% Pure Tart Cherry Juice. This cherry juice is just made from tart cherries and contains 24g of total sugar and 0g of added sugar per 8oz serving. That is an 18g total sugar saving per serving over some other brands of cherry juice.

Is Cherry Juice high in sugar? What have we learned from the above? Well, when it comes to cherry juice Tart Cherry juice tends to be lower in sugar than Black Cherry juice (but always check the label). The lowest sugar 100% cherry juice I found was from Ocean Spray which contains 24g of total sugar per serving. The highest was from Pomona Black Cherry Juice which contains 42g of sugar. That is almost double the amount of the lowest sugar option. What does that mean? It means that whilst there were no sugar-free 100% cherry juices you can lower your sugar intake by picking the right brand.
